Except for the Kiseleff Highway, only sparse buildings were heralding in 1918 the future parcs north of the Victoria Square (the word was derived from parcelare, meaning land plotting), which soon turned into inter-bellum Bucharest's plush districts - the Domeniilor, Bonaparte, Filipescu, Floreasca parc zones. The parks and lakes at Baneasa, Herastrau, Tei and Floreasca were developed in the '30s; they were followed by the Baneasa Forest, the Snagov lake and forest.
The 1918-1940 years' Bucharest saw the construction of the buildings that define today its function as a capital. The new Royal Palace was begun after the 1927 fire and completed ten years later, just like the present building of the Senate.
